Conan the RENEWED Barbarian

This movie review is made possible by omy.sg.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN

If you were born in the 80s, this name would be synonymous with Arnold Schwarzenegger  & his amazing abs.

Now in the 21st century, this name is refreshed with a new remake starring Jason Momoa,  Rachel Nichols, Rose McGowan, Stephen Lang, Ron Perlman, and Bob Sapp.

I’ve never really caught the originals but I do recall them being cheesy. =x This darker interpretation of  Robert E. Howard’s series of stories on the titular character is unapologetically violent with fierce thumps of music. I wouldn’t exactly call this an epic movie coz it mostly consists of fighting, fighting and more fighting… =x and what peaceful moments it had (aka the sex scene) was CENSORED. Haii…

Well, in short, this movie is all about Conan seeking revenge on his father’s murderer and frolicking with a few ladies on the side as entertainment. However, there is one thing I like about this movie and that is: the female lead kicks ass! Ok, she doesn’t do it as professionally as Conan BUT! She can still hold her own in a one-on-one fight! Definitely more than what I can say about female love interests in most cases. =x

All in all…an ok movie. Spectacular fighting scenes and all but…I wished they had done a little more character development. Oh and Rose McGowan seemed a little strained playing the witch daughter of the main villain. I suppose the character was supposed to be all slippery and snakey but somehow she comes across as unnatural. =x

Sex & Bland

This movie review is made possible by omy.sg.

So I was invited to a movie preview of Sex & Zen: Extreme Ecstasy (3D). No, it wasn’t at the Yangtze, which is well-known for its sleazy movie screenings. And yes, I was disappointed. Not because I didn’t get to go to Yangtze. =x But because the movie, which is loosely adapted on its comedic predecessors, has been censored to the point where the plot is reduced into a meaningless love story. 18 minutes worth of sex, torture and rape were cut out but they left images of a huge penis intact. =x

The story is supposed to be about this scholar who wants to improve his sex life because his manhood is un-endearingly small. So he goes for a penis transplant, gets a huge one and proceeds to perform a mass orgy with his patron’s harem. But you won’t see this in the movie because it has been cut out. =x

I don’t mind a little constructive censoring but when important scenes are switched around or cut out for the sake of preserving our *ahem* morality, then the movie might as well be shown exclusively at Yangtze so hentai jijis can enjoy it in its entirety. =x

Oh but Yangtze doesn’t have a 3D screen, right. Time for an upgrade then. =x Hurhur.

It does have a touching ending where the main characters, now an elderly couple, explains to a newly-wed couple why sex isn’t important in a marriage but by this time, you don’t give a damn because…

all the sex has been cut out.

Hurhur.

Light at the end of the tunnel

This blog post was made possible by Cozycot & Spa-Lon.

If you’re suffering from skin problems like eczema, acne, pigmentation or an overly oily complexion etc, there is now light at the end of the tunnel. Literally speaking. =D

You see, I was invited to a Spa Buffet blogger event organised by Cozycot and Spa-Lon. Once there, we were treated to an informative talk on treating various skin conditions with light. Yes, you heard me right. Light.

But wouldn’t light harm my skin? I can see you cover your precious organ (which is our largest one by the way) protectively. Well according to the Spa-Lon representative (didn’t really get his name, sorry about that), it depends on the frequency of light. Which of course contributes to the colour of light we will get.

Human skin regenerates under certain frequencies of light and different colours carry out various functions. For example, do you know that yellow light can boost natural collagen production in your skin? Or that red light kills bacteria and blue light is good for treating acne?

So how does Spa-Lon use light to treat a whole spectrum of skin conditions? By using the ATP-38, the latest breakthrough in beauty and wellness. It combines TEN therapeutic technologies to treat not only your face and body but also your hair! It all sounds very cool right?

ATP-38: The Most Powerful LED Device in the world. (According to their press release)

According to the Spa-Lon representative, this technology poses no harm to your skin because it uses LED light instead of laser ones. Laser light will destroy your first layer of skin cells so they can grow new ones. BUT, LED light penetrates your skin and encourages the cells to regenerate instead. Hence it takes on a more holistic and healing technique. This device has 3 wavelengths namely red, yellow and infrared (which is invisible).

One of the device demonstrations we were given.
Feels a little like tanning lights, huh?

Some of us managed to try out the services but due to an overwhelming turnout of bloggers, I wouldn’t be able to give you an account born from my personal experience but here are a few pictures to whet your appetite:

A blogger tries out the treatment for her eye bags...after a skin consultation of course.
The light treatment begins.
Leg therapy for eczema (She reminds me of a young friend called Korin. XD )
My new found friend at the event, Pris, tries out a treatment for her face.
And there you have it…can’t really tell you whether it works or not because we didn’t have enough time but for a real-life experience of the treatment, do check out Pris’s blog. =D

What I learnt from 7 authors & 1 publisher

Last night, I had the opportunity to attend a APSS meeting thanks to Karen Leong, who is a really brilliant speaker cum inspiring friend of mine. I wouldn’t normally be found at a meeting targeted at nurturing speakers but this particular one had several published authors who were there to give valuable insights on the art of writing and publishing so Karen asked me along. =3 If you guys get the opportunity to attend such events, you should really go for it. You don’t just learn, you also meet people who could help you on your way!

Here are the esteemed authors who made their appearance at the meeting:

  • David Goldwich: Author of Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road? Win-Win Negotiation Skills, and Getting into Singapore
  • Eric Feng: Author of Get to the Point!
  • Christian Chua: Author of How to be a Success Magnet, From Singlish to English, The Essential Teenage Handbook (and more)
  • Mukul Deva: One of the pioneers of the Indian thriller novel, and Author of three bestsellers in three years.
  • Shirley Taylor: Author of 8 books and Series Editor of 8 books in the STTS Success Skills Series
  • Tremaine Du Preez: Author of Think Smart, Work Smarter in the STTS Success Skills Series (Korean translation rights bought within 5 days of publishing!)
  • Michael Podolinsky CSP, Pearson Prentice Hall author of 13 books

Now, only 1 of the 7 authors present was a fiction writer. The rest were all motivational speakers/authors but hey, the tips are valuable nonetheless so I shall share what I learned here. All you aspiring mangaka and writers who want to get started on your Great Novel/Manga had better sit up and take notes! =3

1) It is possible to complete a book within 20 days: According to Michael Podolinsky, all you have to do is block out 90 minutes every day to write. It doesn’t matter when you do it as long as you devote 90 minutes to just pure writing. Tremaine Du Preez did it by switching off all internet access and her handphone.

2) There is no such thing as a writer’s block: If you know your subject, if you have a life full of personal stories, if you have an outline that details what goes into your book, you shouldn’t even be complaining about a writer’s block at all. If you don’t know enough about your subject, then research research and research!

3) Make a contract with yourself or your friends and family to complete your project: Many of us procrastinate. I know I do so I end up not completing myRainy Skies project as I should. =x BUT! If you make a solemn promise to yourself or your friends/family to deliver by a certain date, you can do it! As Mukul Deva mentioned during his talk, “Any fool can have a dream, unless you put a date to it.”

4) Give your readers what they want: A few questions that publishers will frequently ask aspiring writers/mangaka: will your book sell? Will it appeal to your target audience? Does it fill in a lack in the current market? While you’re penning your great work, do it with these questions in mind because according to the statistics compiled by Bowker, publisher of Books in Print®, an average of 336,814 books were published worldwide each year from 2002 to 2008. So to sum it up…how can your book stand out as a drop in the ocean?

5) Books sell best in series: What does JK Rowling, Laurell K Hamilton, Tite Kudo and Masashi Kishimoto have in common? They’re all bestselling creators with wildly popular series.

6) Come up with a plan: Shirley Taylor, who is another great speaker, showed us a template she used for her books. Since she’s a communications specialists, her books are more of the how-to variety. She divided her chapters into manageable sections that people can easily digest in an instant. Of course, we can’t do the same for fiction books or manga but at least come up with a plan. It’ll get you going when you run out of juice while writing or drawing. =3

7) Social media is your best friend: We’re now living in an age of social media. Involve your readers in your creation. Get them to run votes on the type of product they’ll like to see. Like what Eric Feng would say, “don’t just bake a cake, ask people what type of cake they want to eat.” Sounds logical hoh. He also mentioned that readers who get involved in your product are more likely to buy your book. Makes sense, doesn’t it? =3

8 ) Self publishing vs published by a publisher? Both have their plus points:We had this really handsome dude from Marshall Cavendish International (Asia) come in to talk to us about being published by a publisher such as MC. Chris Newson, who is the GM of MC told us that being published by a published is vastly different from being self-published because the publisher takes on the unenviable task of marketing. They will put your books in the bookstores, arrange for book signings etc etc. Oh, one thing he mentioned: bookstores are the worst places to launch a book because the general public don’t really give a damn about your book unless you are James Lee or JK Rowling or Tite Kudo. Chris then went on to recall how heartrending it was to organise book signings but no one turned up. =x

And if your book is launched at the same time as MM Lee’s book? Good luck, pal. =x Hence, social medial such as blogs are very very important in pushing your book into the public awareness. =3

Christian Chua is a self-publisher, but then again he owns a printing company of his own. While publishers sell in bulk, he sells his books by first doing a small print run, then sending free samples to his target audience. For example, Christian first printed 450 copies of a book before sending them as free samples to ALL the primary schools in Singapore along with an order form. Only after receiving orders did Christian run another bigger print run. =3

Another self-publishing benefit that Christian mentioned was the ability to cut side deals, like sponsorships if you happen to mention a particular brand/company (several times) in your book. =3

9) Work with the publisher you’re most comfortable with: Someone asked how to choose a publisher during a meeting and the general consensus among the guest speakers was this: work with someone you can click with. So what if Publisher A can give you 10 times as much upfront as compared to Publisher B, which makes a more affable partner? A long-term working relationship is what gives you the best opportunities and least headaches. =3

10) A book is really judged by its cover: I’ve said this before and I will say it again. Books are judged by their covers so do invest in a good designer or artist to do your cover or you will regret it. =x Go to the bookstore and sit there for a few hours like Eric Feng to find out what are the type of covers that attract people. Or run votes on your Facebook page to garner opinions. Trust me, a cover can really make or break your book sales. It’s just like how a pretty girl will catch your eye first before the average one will, right? =3

AND SO! The top 10 gems that I managed to glean from the meeting. It has been a really wonderful experience because everyone is such a good speaker! NO ONE, and I repeat, NO ONE stumbles over their words (like moi). T.T

And everyone was so energised, I felt thoroughly exhausted after the session. LOL. But hey…you guys should really go for such sessions if you can coz it’s really galvanising and inspiring. =3

In fact, I’m going to wake up earlier every day to write for 90 minutes! Girl Guide Promise! >.<

Is there anything good about men?

Whenever the issue of gender inequality comes up up, some people inevitably rise up in arms. So when International Women’s Day rolled around recently, I read with interest a letter written by a 23-year-old female graduate who had just returned to Singapore after a study stint in Australia.

In it, she wrote about how she had always assumed that she has equal opportunity as any Singaporean male. Imagine her surprise when she realised upon applying to NIE to become a teacher that men have higher salaries in comparison to women. For my foreign readers who are not familiar with Singapore, males who have served National Service for 2.5 years are entitled to a higher pay in the public sector so as to make up for their late entry into the workforce. Private sectors, on the other hand, do not really have such distinctions. If I’m not wrong, that is.

This fact, however, doesn’t sit so well with the writer of the aforementioned letter because she firmly believes that women are being discriminated against in a patriarchal society.

Before I offer my views, let me just say upfront that I’m aware and empathise with instances of gender discrimination. I do not approve of sexist practices where women are fired from their jobs because they’re pregnant, where they’re deliberately given lower salaries because they are female or where they are made to suffer because they are assumed to be inferior to their male counterparts.

To be frank, I have always taken for granted the fact that guys have a higher salary because of their National Service stint. It has never bothered me before either because I see it as a fair trade-off for the time they put in to learn how to protect our country. Think of it this way, a girl can enter the workforce straight after graduation but a guy has to spend 2.5 years surviving on a small allowance. Even when he enters the workforce after his mandatory service to his country, he is at least a couple of years behind his female counterpart. Let me do the Math for you:

Let’s say a guy gets $400 allowance per month throughout his 2.5 years of NS, he would have earned:

$400 x 30 months = $12 000

A woman who enters the workforce at the same time her male counterpart (who is the same age) enters NS, assuming she earns $2 000 per month and consistently stays at her job without resignation or retrenchment, excluding any pay increment, bonuses or other miscellaneous benefits:

$2 500 x 30 months = $75 000

You see the HUGE difference? A female literally earns $63 000 more than a male during the same period of time yet certain women are raging about the fact that they earn less than a man. They forget about the fact that by the time their male peers finish serving their mandatory NS, they are at least 2 years ahead of them in terms of promotions or any academic upgrade to secure a better salary.

Granted, there are overwhelming evidence from other countries such as UK and USA that show women earning less than their male counterparts. To date, women in most countries enjoy freer access to quality education and more women are earning the majority of diplomas and degrees in fields where men used to dominate. The question is: since women have had a better start in life than their mothers and grandmothers, why are they still lagging behind in terms of salary, promotions and increments?

The answer lies in this article.  According to it, women and men are indeed different, not just genetically but in motivations. Since eons ago, men have been conditioned to be the breadwinner (aka the hunter) while women are supposed to nurture the family (aka the gatherer). Neither group are inferior to each other because they each fulfill a vital function that kept the society going.

The reason why men appear to be earning more is because they are supposed to. Their main motivation is to provide for the family. Women, on the other hand, dare I say…are not as motivated to provide for the family. Now, before you hardcore feminists throw rotten tomatoes at me, let me just say point you towards this article written by a business writer and a feminist:

I shouldn’t have left the finances to my husband.”

In it, the writer describes how she became overly dependent on her ex-husband financially. Although she does make a living as a writer, her salary was only one-tenth of her ex-husband’s.

At the beginning of each year he gave me a certain amount of cash (we were both too politically savvy to call it an allowance), which, combined with my comparatively low earnings as a writer, funded my life throughout the year.

While her husband kept her updated on all their financial investments and the house’s mortgage that he was financing, the writer was always too tired and too busy from caring for the family to look into them.

…while my husband worked, pursuing a coveted law partnership and spending much of his limited free time researching stocks, retirement vehicles and various high-tech gadgets, I focused on pink-collar work: the kids, grocery shopping, housecleaning, cooking meals, supervising homework, picking up dry cleaning and arranging play dates. My freelance writing career was squeezed into what little space existed between everyone else’s needs. I had little energy left over to request passwords to the mutual fund accounts so I could check on how things were doing, or ponder changing the allocation of our investment portfolio.

The article writer had, unfortunately, fallen into what Colette Dowling describes in her book as the “Cinderella Complex” where women become afraid of being independent. In this case, the article writer had clearly chose not to educate herself about the family finances because women had traditionally not been brought up to talk about money or manage their own. Again, motivations play a huge part here.

The thing that struck me the most was the instance when the writer described her difficulty in getting the mortgage officer to release details of the mortgage account that her ex-husband had passed to her, which she later found out that it wasn’t under her name.

“Why?” I asked him. “Why would we have a mortgage without my name on it?” He paused, then said: “I didn’t need you.”

I don’t know about you, but I personally feel that it’s quite humiliating.

Another reason why women could possibly be making less than their counterparts is this: they are choosing to opt out. They are highly educated but they are choosing their families over their high flying careers or well-paid jobs. Of course, I’m not saying that it’s shameful to choose one’s family over career. After all, as Ang Fung Fung (KPMG) said in a recent interview, “what it means by balance to you may not be the same to me.”

Everyone’s idea of “balance” is different. Everyone’s idea of adding value is different, and that’s where motivations, again come into play. Women may choose jobs that pay them less than men, because perhaps that’s where their natural talents lie. It doesn’t make them any less inferior because, hey, can you do without your administrative department? Can you handle your job in addition to all the administration that are quite simply, time suckers?

If you, as a woman, have chosen a job that fits your talents and pays you well at the same time, KUDOS. Just don’t forget to ask for your much needed promotion and salary increment when the time comes. Don’t wait until your boss remembers to reward you because they won’t. Sure, good bosses will remember but there is nothing wrong with opening your golden mouth to ask for something you deserve.

Remember: the key word is ask with a firm conviction. NOT demand.

It won’t do us women any good to over-victimise our situation and play tug of war with the guys. Try seeing things from a more gender-neutral view instead. =3

Try to think less of what the society owes you as a woman, but more of how you can add value to the society and your family as a woman instead. Work on your talents and fulfill your potential.
